Farrans Utilities was formally established within the Company in 2000. Since then it has developed in scope and scale opening offices in Scotland and The Republic of Ireland, whilst increasing turnover year on year through framework contracts for rehabilitation, maintenance and leakage with Northern Ireland Water and similarly for Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and others.
We are one of the major contractors working on the Northern Ireland Water Mains Rehabilitation Framework, Phases I and II. Our role incorporates management of detailed design and modelling, planning, programming, roads authority formal notification (NISRANS), liaison, networks liaison, HSEQ management, customer notifications, site preparation, pre-chlorination, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and as built drawings.
To date more than 1100 kms of water pipeline has been installed on both phases of the contract, over 80% by trenchless technology, and 85000 consumer services have been transferred in 40 work packages province wide.
There have been over 7000 customer contacts undertaken by our customer care team since the beginning of the contract.
We have carried out work for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) installing fibre optic ducting to enable information technology interconnectivity between Police Headquarters to sub stations throughout Belfast and surrounding areas.
For the private sector, we are working on a range of multi-utility installation contracts for developers throughout Northern Ireland.
A significant presence has also been established in the Republic of Ireland carrying out rehabilitation works and site investigation contracts for Dublin City Council and Fingal County Council.
Within the Scottish region, we are an Associate Delivery Partner (ADP) on Scottish Water’s Q&S III programme. This work currently produces a turnover circa £5m pa and is controlled by our regional utility office and yard in Livingston. We have recently completed a £1.2m gas main rehabilitation contract with Scottish Gas Networks upgrading mains and service connections in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.
In 2009 we extended our operations into England operating from the main Farrans Office at Waterbeach, Cambridge. The Division was successful in gaining selection for the AMP5 Special Infrastructure Projects select lists for Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water. Thus far the company have delivered the £1m Whittle Dene Pipeline upgrade works in Newcastle upon Tyne, the £23m Abberton Pipeline Scheme in Essex & Suffolk and are currently working on the £4m Wormingford Pumping Station.
Current projects also include the £1m service diversion and foundations project for the East West Interconnector Project in Liverpool.
ICE Bridges to Schools and Farrans visit Broughshane Primary
Broughshane Primary School’s P6 and P7 class project on bridges was brought to life when Farrans, in conjunction with the Institution of Civil Engineers, gave them their very own bridge to build, letting them put their research into practice.
