National Apprenticeship Week: Scott Gaterell shares his experience
It’s National Apprenticeship Week and Scott Gaterell, an apprentice engineer with Farrans, has taken part in an interview to share insights into his chosen career path and provide valuable advice to those who may be interested in following the same path.
What made you choose this career path?
I want to become a fully fledged engineer and be completely independent. I want to perfect my role here and prove my worth to Farrans and my colleagues. I studied IT initially, but it wasn’t right for me. Then a family friend suggested a site management job – I completed an HNC in Engineering as an entry route. I’ll settle in first then look at options to specialise in.
What were the entry requirements for your apprenticeship?
GCSE Maths and English grade C and functional Skills. I also did an HNC in Engineering.
How did you find this apprenticeship?
Through an agency. I sent my CV to various sites, including ‘CV Library’ who then hooked me up with Farrans.
Were there any challenges when finding your apprenticeship placement?
I spent a month responding to lots of adverts and sending my CV to lots of agencies before I found this job.
What aspect of your job do you enjoy most?
Meeting new people and seeing a job come together.
What do you find most challenging in your apprenticeship?
Somewhere to live at the start – living in hotels isn’t ideal.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Being fully qualified and independent.
What advice would you give to others thinking about following this career path?
Get your head down and listen to advice. Don’t be scared to ask for help or any questions – ‘stupid questions’ don’t exist.
