Farrans joins Wear Rivers Trust for volunteering day

25.05.2026

Farrans recently volunteered alongside Wear Rivers Trust to support environmental improvement works on the River Gaunless in Bishop Auckland, contributing to the ongoing Northumbrian Water Blue Spaces Scheme.

The volunteering day saw members of the Farrans’ team take part in a range of practical conservation activities designed to improve river health, biodiversity and long-term environmental resilience within the Gaunless catchment.

Over the course of the four-hour session, volunteers supported the construction of a “green engineered” revetment using natural materials including logs and willow to help stabilise eroded riverbanks. The approach encourages natural regeneration, reduces silt run-off into watercourses and creates improved habitats for native wildlife species.

The team also participated in Riverfly monitoring activities, helping assess water quality by identifying and recording aquatic invertebrates found within the riverbed. These sensitive species provide an important indicator of river health, with monitoring data contributing to wider environmental protection efforts through the Riverfly Partnership.

In addition, our volunteers assisted with the removal of Himalayan balsam, an invasive non-native species which can damage riverbanks and outcompete native plants. Removing the shallow-rooted plants before they seed helps protect and restore local biodiversity along the river corridor.

Farrans has previously supported Wear Rivers Trust through sponsorship initiatives, including funding workwear jackets for the charity’s team and supporting its 2025 Riverfest summer event.

By working alongside organisations such as Wear Rivers Trust, Farrans continues to support projects that deliver positive environmental and community impact while helping to create more sustainable, resilient places for future generations.
