Farrans partners with social enterprise Science Starz
Farrans has partnered with social enterprise Science Starz, to create an educational programme designed to support primary level pupils to be motivated and inspired to tackle sustainability challenges.
Engaging lessons have been developed in line with the pupils’ curriculum, to ensure Farrans is adding further value for schools and pupils participating.
In September 2021, Farrans ran a pilot programme and delivered interactive workshops to over 60 pupils in St Colmcille’s Primary School, Downpatrick.
The programme focused on Sustainability, using recycled materials from our plant department the children then designed and built bridges and boats following the engineering design process. A key message was given to the children; their imagination, creativity and problem-solving skills are key to solving existing environmental challenges.
Principal of the school, Stephen Austin, said: “A huge thanks to Farrans for organising fun science workshops for our P.3 and P.4 pupils. It was a thoroughly enjoyable learning experience for the children and a great way for them to develop their STEAM skills.”
Clara Burns, CSR manager for Farrans Construction, said: “Research has shown that career choices are influenced by childhood experiences. Igniting an interest as early as possible is key to fostering a life-long interest in STEAM subjects.
“In order to meet CSR and SDG’s we seek to bridge the gap between the STEAM industry and the education sector. We promote STEAM subjects in every area we operate and aspire to deliver primary level outreach to 100 schools each year. At Farrans, we are committed to being a responsible business and with that we understand that our purpose is beyond profit. The sustainability of our sector depends on the development of skills and an appetite for STEAM subjects and careers.”
