Farrans’ team on Craigavon Bridge partner with Foyle Search and Rescue for safety training

17.02.2026

πŸ›ŸThank you to Foyle Search and Rescue for delivering a practical training session on water rescue at our Craigavon Bridge project in Derry-Londonderry for Northern Ireland Water.πŸ›Ÿ

With current works involving activities on a barge and scaffolding over water, the session was both timely and valuable. Working in close proximity to water brings specific risks, and the training reinforced the preventative measures and emergency response procedures in place to keep everyone safe.
We covered:
🌊The correct fitting and inspection of life jackets including secondary checks
πŸ›ŸThe safe deployment of life rings
⚠️The importance of keeping surrounding areas clear of trip hazards
πŸ“’Clear communication during water related emergencies and how to confirm locations
πŸŠπŸΌβ€β™€οΈWhat to do if you enter the water – remain calm, float on your back and conserve energy
πŸ₯Immediate first aid including procedures to prevent hypothermia

A live rescue drill formed part of the session, with a dummy thrown from Craigavon Bridge into the water to simulate a real incident. The Project Emergency Coordinator raised the alarm using three short blasts of the air horn, while a designated spotter remained at the point of entry to guide the rescue team. Foyle Search & Rescue were contacted via two-way radio, provided with the relevant coordinates, and a life ring was deployed near the casualty.
