Life as a Quantity Surveyor

20.10.2021

Are you considering joining Farrans as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor? Eoin Teague joined Farrans on a placement in 2017 and he hasn’t looked back.

Tell me about your role?

I am a Quantity Surveyor for Farrans Construction and I’m currently involved in two different projects. I joined Farrans for my placement year back in mid-2017 and worked until the end of the summer in 2018 which was about 14 months in total. When applying for placement positions, I was lucky enough to receive several different offers from some great companies. However, when Farrans offered me the position I quickly accepted it and looked no further.  I already had a few friends who had worked for the company and they couldn’t recommend Farrans highly enough. As well as this, I looked into some of the major schemes Farrans has delivered over the years and decided that I wanted to be involved on projects of a similar nature.

Following on from the completion of my placement year, Farrans then offered me a bursary reward for good performance which contributed to paying for my final year fees of university as well as offering me a full-time job upon completion of my degree.

What training and support have you had since then?

From the beginning of my career with Farrans until now, I have always had amazing support around me. At a time when you are unsure about something or need a second opinion, there are always people here who are happy to help and point you in the right direction.

As well as this, I can safely say that Farrans contribute massively to everyone’s training and development within the company and to date I have been involved in many different internal and external training courses.

Recently, I just handed in my completed folder for Farrans Foundation which is a two-year course that graduates within the company undertake and it helps build your capabilities across different aspects of the business. It involves completing different tasks on topics such as Health & Safety, Engineering, Quality, Commercial Awareness and Programming. This training is put in place by Farrans to help accelerate your career and expand your knowledge on a range of different topics.

What does a day in your life look like?

A day in my life currently looks like working from either the site offices or the head office in Dunmurry. Regardless of where I am based, I work on the commercial aspects of both of the jobs I am involved in ensuring subcontractors are paid on time, works are measured accurately and ensuring our jobs are contributing well to the company’s overall performance.

Currently, about three or four days of my week is spent working on a project in Banbridge and the other day or two is spent working on the Play Parks scheme.

Tell me one thing that has surprised you about working for Farrans?

The one thing that has surprised me the most with working with Farrans is the level of training, development and support you receive from everyone within the company. There is no such thing as a silly question, everyone is very willing and happy to take time out of their day to help you when needed. As well as this, everyone is extremely friendly. I can safely say that the people I work with aren’t just colleagues, they are good friends.

Does Farrans make it easy to join new sites in new locations?

Yes, they do. Regardless of the location you are working, you receive full support and guidance. As well as this, the comfort of knowing you will be working with lots of different great people and experiencing lots of different places throughout the UK and Ireland definitely helps!

Which sites have you worked on and what experience have you gained?

To date, I have worked on two large school projects in two different areas of London worth approximately £60-£70M in total. Since then, I had a brief spell on a large signature care home in London before starting to work in Banbridge and the Play Parks Projects in Northern Ireland about two years ago.

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals are to work as hard as I can, play my part in the continued success and growth of Farrans as a company and help deliver many different schemes to our valued client’s expectations. I aspire to progress through the company and have an extremely successful career within our ever-changing and somewhat unpredictable industry.
