National Apprenticeship Week: Interview with Laura McDermott
Laura McDermott, an Apprentice Engineer, working for Farrans within the NI Water framework tells us more about her role as an apprentice as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025.
How long have you been employed with Farrans?
I have been employed since October 2024, after completing my GCSEs. I studied for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. I then completed a foundation degree and I am now studying for a BEng in Civil Engineering at Queens University.
What does your workday as an apprentice look like?
My workday starts at 8 am on site. I ensure all the paperwork is updated, mark out existing services before excavation begins, and constantly monitor operations to ensure everything is running smoothly. I also prepare for future works, which includes ordering materials.
What is the most rewarding thing about your role?
Seeing the job make progress and being a part of it.
What’s one thing about your job that most people wouldn’t expect?
I feel that communication is a huge part of this job. You build strong relationships with people along the way.
What advice would you give to someone interested in completing an apprenticeship in the construction industry?
I would say your first few weeks will feel overwhelming as you adjust to balancing work and part-time study, but it does get easier. In the end, it’s worth it.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy socialising with friends and family and I play the button accordion.
What’s one thing you are proud of?
I was one of a few women in Northern Ireland selected for the Women in Plant program, which allowed me to obtain my digger and dumper ticket.
