National Apprenticeship Week: “It’s never too late to be an apprentice”
Craig Delaney, an Apprentice Engineer working at one of our wind farm projects in Scotland, tells us more about his role for National Apprenticeship Week 2025.
How long have you been with Farrans?
I have worked for Farrans for 6 months. Prior to this I was a Wind Turbine Technician and gained the opportunity with Farrans during a period of career reflection when I had made the decision to pursue a career in the Civil Engineering Industry.
What does your workday as an apprentice look like?
My day as an apprentice can take shape in several ways but my main duties involve setting out for our subcontractors to build our wind farm. Other duties include undertaking site inductions, ensuring our paperwork is compliant and liaising with our client and subcontractors to enable a clear path in progressing the project as safely and efficiently as possible.
What is the most rewarding thing about your role?
The most rewarding thing about my role is it enables me to see a project from its bare start to completion. For me personally that brings great pride and job satisfaction.
One thing about your job that most people wouldn’t expect.
The level of knowledge you gain on a day-to-day basis, mainly due to the forever progressing nature of the project and our industry.
What advice would you give to someone interested in completing an apprenticeship in the construction industry?
I would advise it regardless of your age, it is never too late to be an apprentice. Having started at 29 years of age I have joined with a wealth of knowledge from working within the industry and have applied this to my current role. Further to this, if you have an interest in the Civil Engineering/Construction industry I would definitely recommend being involved due to the variety of different roles that can be given as an apprentice.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my partner Lauren and my 3 children, Jessica, Ciaran & Lucia. I also enjoy watching football and darts.
One thing that you are proud of?
My kids. I am extremely proud as a father of 3. To see my kids growing and shaping themselves to become an integral part of our society. Especially given they want to follow their dad’s footsteps and become engineers.
