Farrans was the main contractor on Camster II wind farm for RWE, one of the world’s leading renewables companies. The wind farm is now successfully completed and commissioned.
The 36 megawatts (MW) project was first consented in July 2021 and construction started in 2023. It first generated electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational with the capacity to power the equivalent of around 51,000 typical homes.
Camster II consists of 10 turbines and is one of four new RWE onshore wind farms in Scotland under construction and the first to be completed and commissioned.
Camster II is RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in Caithness, adding to a growing cluster that delivers significant economies of scale and helps strengthen local job security. Farrans supported over 50 roles during the construction works, welcomed two early careers civil engineering students and an apprentice. We also appointed 54% of all its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, including Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, and representing 56% of the total subcontract spend.

Innovation in peat reinstatement
Camster II is not only helping future-proof Scotland’s power supply by enhancing energy security with reliable, renewable generation, but is also delivering tangible environmental improvements. During construction, the trial of an experimental peat reinstatement method—reusing peat from turbine foundations for forestry reinstatement—earned recognition from Nature Scot and environmental groups. Furthermore, a core path to the east of the site was resurfaced and a new equestrian gate installed, improving access for recreational horse riders.
Patrick Murray, Regional Director for Farrans, said: “We are delighted to see Camster II now supplying homes and contributing to our national renewable energy targets. Our extensive portfolio in delivering onshore wind farms and our long history of operations in Scotland meant that we were well placed to be the main contractor for RWE, a client we have developed an excellent longstanding relationship with.”
Farrans is continuing to work with RWE, this time supporting the construction of its Golticlay wind farm.
