Farrans were appointed as principal contractor on the newbuild MRO and FBO Facility at Marshalls Aerospace Cambridge.
Airside Working
This hangar build project was constructed airside on a live Airport environment and involved a complex sequence of operations, within a constrained, secure environment, within the busy Cambridge city centre.
Managing safety was of paramount importance, with the added complexity of working close to live MRO facilities and regular maneuvering of jet planes. Careful planning of working methodologies, deliveries and routes to site was critical. Regular, close liaison with the Client was maintained with excellent safety results, with zero RIDDOR’s.
Farrans adopted Marshalls strict SHEQ policies in line with Aviation standards for working both Airside and Landside and ensured our supply chain were fully compliant with all security protocols.
Programme Management & Communication
The works involved the demolition of existing hangar structures and ground remediation before the main works could commence. Dust control and strict adherence to environmental controls was ensured at all times.
Proactive management of the demolition & remediation works and communication with the subsequent supply chain ensured the successful programme delivery.
Regular updates were provided to and discussed with the client’s representative and plans for future operations were agreed in advance and carried out in order to avoid or minimize disruption to client operations.

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)
The hangar structure was a prefabricated, sprung system-build, delivered to site ready for erection. This innovative method of construction provided certainty around programme, budget and quality control. Successful delivery of this building required regular interfacing with the manufacturer of the Hangar and close coordination with our dedicated design coordinator and design team.
Specialist Fitout
The project included the addition of a terminal Executive Business Lounge to accompany the new hangar. This facility was constructed with a volumetric modular system for speed of program & fully fitted out to comprise of an executive handling facility for travelers, a conference suite, including exceptional hospitality and catering and business services, planning centre and rest cabins for pilots.
Overall, the project was a huge success for both parties. We have a good relationship with Marshall’s and have undertaken further works at the Cambridge site.
