Farrans and CITB NI visit St Fanchea’s Girls School

23.07.2025

Before the school holidays got underway Farrans and the CITB NI visited St Fanchea’s Girls’ College in Enniskillen.

As part of this collaborative session, CITB NI provided a presentation on the general construction industry, focusing on roles and pathways into construction, for 20 Year 10 students pursuing their Technology and Design GCSE.

Laura McDermott, an apprentice engineer at Farrans, who is currently working within the Uisce Éireann framework, delivered an insightful presentation about her journey into the industry and what a typical day as an engineer entails.

The Year 10 students participated in an engaging civil engineering activity focused on water pipelines.

They explored the daily challenges encountered during the installation of water mains and learned how these obstacles can be overcome. Additionally, they discovered the roles played by Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, and SHE advisors in this process.

There was a significant amount of interest, discussion and engagement among the students regarding construction careers and the various pathways available.

We are hopeful that the partnership between Farrans and CITB NI has inspired some future engineers.
