Farrans supports Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineer of the Year Award

10.12.2025

We were proud to play our part in last week’s Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineer Award by visiting five schools across five different counties and engaging with over 220 pupils.

Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineer of the Year award is a competition for primary school students in 3rd and 4th class to develop a creative engineering project to help or improve their local community.

Children are tasked with identifying a problem and then work in teams to come up with a creative engineering solution. They are also encouraged to focus on sustainability when creating their solution.

Our Stakeholder and Social Value team partnered with our engineers to give a ‘role model’ presentation on careers in the industry and then judge the projects.

By taking part in this program, students got to experience the excitement of designing and building a real project, discover the challenges and creativity involved, and get a true feel for what it’s like to be an engineer. We hope this experience will inspire many of them to consider a future career in construction.

We visited schools close to our Uisce Éireann and NI Water projects including St Clare’s Cavan which had six classes taking part with over 30 projects. We also went to Scoil Iosa, Ballyhaunis, Mayo, Ballyhmana, Galway, Doohamlet National School, Monaghan and St Teresa’s Primary School in Lurgan.
