Farrans and Women’s Tec deliver construction workshop at St Patrick’s Primary School as part of NI Water project
Our team working with NI Water in the scenic foothills of the Mourne mountains recently teamed up with Women’s Tec to visit St Patrick’s Primary School in Hilltown, County Down.
Women’s Tec runs a #NotJustForBoys program aimed at encouraging women to pursue careers in construction.
During our session with two Primary 7 classes, the students were engaged in creating their own wooden planters. The project required students to first sand the wooden pieces, smoothing the surfaces. Next, they assembled the pieces by fastening them together using screwdrivers. After the assembly, they used drills to create holes at the base of the planters. To complete the project, each student personalised their planter with paint.
The visit wasn’t only about building planters; it was about building confidence and breaking down stereotypes. By showing these young minds that construction is a field open to everyone, we’re paving the way for a more inclusive future.
The collaboration with Women’s Tec was instrumental in conveying this message, demonstrating that skills in construction are not determined by gender but by passion and talent. Engaging with the next generation in such meaningful ways reminds us of the importance of community involvement and the power of hands-on learning experiences.
